Inspire and engage your students in studying the incredible volcanoes of the world!

For tens of thousands of years, humans have tried to understand volcanoes and how they function. Many ancient cultures believed that supernatural beings were inside volcanoes, and were responsible for their sometimes powerful eruptions. Our modern understanding of volcanoes can be largely attributed to the creation of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory in 1912, where much study has occurred. From the snow-covered peaks of Mount Fuji, to low-laying shield plains of Kilauea, the variety of volcanoes is truly remarkable. For this assignment, students will choose a volcano to study and create a project to showcase their learning. Have fun!

This resource guides students through the process of conducting their own research report on a volcano. First, students learn how to properly conduct research without plagiarizing their sources. After researching, students choose how to showcase their learning by creating a poster board, presentation board, PowerPoint, or dodecahedron (Dodecahedron Instructions and templates are included). Afterwards, students present their learning to the class and self-assess their achievement (Teacher Rubric also included).

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students are challenged to actively learn about a subject for an extended period of time. It is a form of active learning or inquiry-based learning. Project-Based Learning is in contrast to paper-based, rote memorization, or teacher-led instruction that presents established facts.
