Engage your students in project-based learning!
Since 1937, readers from around the world have been captivated by the classic fantasy novel, The Hobbit, written by J.R.R. Tolkien. Whether it is the unforgettable characters, the magnificent settings, or the engaging style of writing, there is so much to love about this novel. For this project, you will complete 12 activities related to The Hobbit and construct a 12-sided polyhedron called a dodecahedron to showcase your learning. Have fun!
For this project, students complete 12 activities related to The Hobbit (Title Page, Bilbo Baggins, Bag End, Gandalf, Thorin Oakenshield, Mirkwood, Gollum, Sauron, One Ring, Bard, Smaug, References) and construct a 12-sided polyhedron called a dodecahedron to showcase their learning. These can be hung from the ceiling and are beautiful on display.
For each pentagon, students are asked to answer the guiding questions and complete the challenges through conducting research. To communicate their learning, students write and draw pictures within each pentagon. After completing the 12 pentagons, students follow step-by-step instructions to construct their dodecahedrons.

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students are challenged to actively learn about a subject for an extended period of time. It is a form of active learning or inquiry-based learning. Project-Based Learning is in contrast to paper-based, rote memorization, or teacher-led instruction that presents established facts. This was a wonderful end-of-year project for my 5th and 6th grade students. Because some weren't strong readers, we would listen to the audio book in class and they would use the "notes" section of this project to jot down interesting information as we went. If I do it again, I would remove the sections on the One Ring and Sauron and add something else so that we would only cover characters within "The Hobbit." Expanding it out to the rest of the series was a bit much for beginners. Either way, we really enjoyed this project as a class and I enjoyed that it could be modified within the Word document. The new templates pages look like a great addition to an already great project.
The Hobbit Dodecahedron Project is a fantastic resource for ELA teachers looking to bring J.R.R. Tolkien's classic tale to life in a captivating and interactive way. The combination of project-based learning, student choice through editable content, and the final artistic creation makes it a valuable asset for any classroom. Highly recommend exploring this resource to transform your Hobbit unit into an unforgettable adventure!
I loved this project! My students had a great time creating their own versions, and it was awesome to see them using their creative side along with the ELA analysis skills for the novel. I will for sure use this again!
