Engage your students in studying the technologies of the past, present, and future!

Since the beginning of humanity, people have been inventing technologies to help them solve problems and satisfy needs. From the stone tools of the prehistoric era, to the mobile phones and the Internet of today, many technologies have impacted our lives dramatically. For this assignment, students choose a technology to study and create a project to showcase their learning.

This resource guides students through conducting their own research report on a technology (90+ topics are listed). After choosing a topic to focus on, students are asked to conduct research using the Internet and books while following criteria. Next, students are asked to share their learning by creating a poster board, presentation board, power point presentation, or dodecahedron (Instructions and Pentagon Template included). Artwork may also be created to further display learning. Finally, students present their work to the class.

Can be done in partners. Printable Evaluation forms included!

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students are challenged to actively learn about a subject for an extended period of time. It is a form of active learning or inquiry-based learning. Project-Based Learning is in contrast to paper-based, rote memorization, or teacher-led instruction that presents established facts. This technology research project is extremely well organized. The structure is well thought-out, making it easy for students to follow and stay engaged throughout the process. The introduction gives a clear overview of the assignment, and the directions are concise and simple to understand, making it accessible for a wide range of learners.

What stands out most is the ample selection of research topics provided. Students are given enough options to explore different areas of technology, allowing them to choose something that sparks their interest while also challenging them to dive deeper into the subject. This flexibility helps promote curiosity and encourages students to take ownership of their learning.

Overall, this project strikes an excellent balance between offering structured guidance and allowing students to explore their own interests. It's well-organized, informative, and motivating, making it an excellent resource for helping my 6th graders develop both their research and writing skills in technology.
