Help create future engineers!
In 1767, the Swiss naturalist, Horace de Saussure, wondered whether he could harness the sun’s energy to cook food. This led him to invent the world’s first solar oven. Solar ovens are renewable energy devices that use solar energy to cook food. The benefits of using solar ovens are numerous. Because they do not require fuel to operate, they help conserve energy and do not pollute the environment. Solar ovens are also environmentally friendly because they can be made using everyday recycling materials. In an emergency, they can be used to cook food without electricity, and can even boil water to make drinking water safe. For this activity students will design and construct their own solar oven that can be used to cook Smores. Have fun!

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students are challenged to actively learn about a subject for an extended period of time. It is a form of active learning or inquiry-based learning. Project-Based Learning is in contrast to paper-based, rote memorization, or teacher-led instruction that presents established facts. The kids loved doing this activity especially since we got to be outside.
This was super fun for my students. We used this at the end of last school year and it was a stellar way to end the year.
