Engage your students in studying their favorite rocks!
At least 2 million years ago, humans and other hominids began using rocks to make tools for hunting, wood working, and preparing food. In modern times, rocks are still used in new technologies such as the use of manganese power future electric vehicles. From gypsum found within drywall to diamonds cut for engagement rings, rocks and minerals continue to play an important role in human civilization. For this assignment, you will choose a rock to study and create a project to showcase your learning. Have fun!
This resource guides students through conducting their own research report on rocks (50+ topics are listed). After choosing a topic to focus on, students are asked to conduct research using the Internet and books while following criteria. Next, students are asked to share their learning by creating a poster board, presentation board, power point presentation, or dodecahedron (Instructions and Pentagon Template included). Artwork may also be created to further display learning. Finally, students present their work to the class.

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students are challenged to actively learn about a subject for an extended period of time. It is a form of active learning or inquiry-based learning. Project-Based Learning is in contrast to paper-based, rote memorization, or teacher-led instruction that presents established facts.

This was a great project for my students to do on their own and learn more about the different types of rocks with the Earth. It allowed my students to be creative and they enjoy doing hands on projects.
I'm amazed that this project with a rubric and with an outline for research is free. Thank you for this amazing resource.
