Engage your students in learning perimeter through creating their own robots!
Throughout modern history, people have been fascinated with the idea of creating robots to perform various tasks. From Unimate, the world’s first robot created in 1954 by George C. Divol, to the social humanoid, Sophia, created by Hanson Robotics, the advance in robotics has been truly remarkable. For this project, each student designs and constructs their own robot and calculates the perimeter of its parts. Have fun!
This resource guides students through the process of designing and creating their own robots to encourage students to develop a deep understanding of perimeter. After conducting research on robot design, students sketch their ideas on a practice design page. Next, students draw their robots onto grid paper (3 different sizes are provided) and make their calculations using the template provided. Afterwards, they glue their robots onto construction paper along with the display labels showcasing their learning. Once complete, these projects look fantastic on hallway bulletin boards!

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students are challenged to actively learn about a subject for an extended period of time. It is a form of active learning or inquiry-based learning. Project-Based Learning is in contrast to paper-based, rote memorization, or teacher-led instruction that presents established facts.
