Natural disasters are naturally occurring events that negatively affect a large population of people. Natural disasters can unfortunately cause loss of life, as well as property, economic and environmental damage. Although by definition, natural disasters are ‘natural’, most scientist agree that human behaviour also plays a role. Certainly, the more we understand natural disasters and their causes, the better equipped we will be in protecting human life. For this activity, students study natural disasters and create an interactive fan to showcase their learning. Have fun!

Using the Internet and/or books, the students research the natural disasters (Volcanic Eruptions, Tornadoes, Floods, Thunderstorms, Tsunamis, Wildfires, Landslides, and Earthquakes) and write 3 interesting facts for each. At the bottom of each page, students research and write about what people can do to prepare themselves for each disaster. On the back page, students are asked to research the impact Global Warming has on natural disasters and what we can do to minimize damage caused by natural disasters.

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students are challenged to actively learn about a subject for an extended period of time. It is a form of active learning or inquiry-based learning. Project-Based Learning is in contrast to paper-based, rote memorization, or teacher-led instruction that presents established facts.
