Engage your students in learning volume through creating their own Minecraft characters!
Since 2011, gamers from around the world have fallen in love with the open world building game, Minecraft, created by Markus Perrson. Whether it is the intentionally pixelated graphics, the open world concept, or the quirky characters, there is so much to love about this game. From Steve’s classic design to Enderman’s tall and lanky frame, the characters in Minecraft vary greatly from one another. For this project, students will design and construct a character from Minecraft and calculate the volume of its parts. Have fun!
This resource guides students through the process of designing and creating their own Minecraft characters to help students to develop a deep understanding of volume. After conducting research on character design, students sketch their ideas on a practice design page. Next, students draw their characters onto grid paper (3 different sizes are provided), construct their rectangular prisms, and make their calculations using the templates provided. Afterwards, they glue their characters onto construction paper along with the display labels showcasing their learning. Once complete, these projects look fantastic on hallway bulletin boards!

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students are challenged to actively learn about a subject for an extended period of time. It is a form of active learning or inquiry-based learning. Project-Based Learning is in contrast to paper-based, rote memorization, or teacher-led instruction that presents established facts. Please be aware of what you are purchasing.

This project was awesome and supplemented the volume unit in our curriculum. We used this for open house!
My students LOVED this project! We did it the week before winter break, and they were talking about it for the rest of the year!
I just wanted to say thank you for the wonderful resource! I recently purchased from your TPT store, and I’m really excited to use it in my classroom. It looks thoughtfully designed and will definitely save me time while engaging my students.
I appreciate the work you put into creating quality materials for educators. Keep up the great work!
Such a fun way to get students excited about doing PBLs. We did this together and I learned a lot about Minecraft in the process. This led to them being able to complete other PBLs on their own.
My students loved this project to wrap up our volume unit!
