Engage your students in studying their favorite dinosaurs!
Dinosaurs are a diverse group of Archosaur reptiles that lived during the Mesozoic era (252 – 66 million years ago). Even though dinosaurs have been extinct for millions of years, we can learn many things from studying them. For example, we can gain insight into the impact of climate change and extinction events on the survival of species. From the four-winged Microraptor (length 2.5’) to the long-necked Argentinosaurus (length 130’), dinosaurs come in many shapes and sizes. For this assignment, students choose a dinosaur to study and create a project to showcase their learning.
This resource guides students through conducting their own research report on a dinosaur (50 topics are listed). After choosing a topic to focus on, students are asked to conduct research using the Internet and books while following criteria. Next, students are asked to share their learning by creating a poster board, presentation board, power point presentation, or dodecahedron (Instructions and Pentagon Template included). Artwork may also be created to further display learning. Finally, students present their work to the class. To help students choose a research topic (and to introduce the project to the class) we have included a PowerPoint that features the Top 10 Research Topics.

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a student-centered pedagogy in which students are challenged to actively learn about a subject for an extended period of time. It is a form of active learning or inquiry-based learning. Project-Based Learning is in contrast to paper-based, rote memorization, or teacher-led instruction that presents established facts.

Students used this resource to learn about a dinosaur of their choosing from a list. They had a lot of fun completing this assignment then presented their dinosaur to the class. They then sorted dinosaurs into different categories. It worked out very well.
